Many subscription services in the games industry are easy to follow. The Epic Games Store offers free games every Thursday, Xbox Game Passunveils two waves of new releases in addition to monthly surprises, and Sony follows a consistent Wednesday/Tuesday release cycle for PS Plus.
Of course, plans can fail and fans can end up waiting for a new batch of games. This has happened in the past and could happen again; however, if the announcement of free PS Plus games for May 2024 doesn’t happen by 24 April, fans shouldn’t be upset.
If it does, it doesn’t mean that Sony or PS Plus have nothing to announce; it’s just a change in the usual pattern. PS Plus Essential, Extra and Premium normally release a list of games and add them on the first or third Tuesday of the month, with occasional variations for PS Plus Extra and Premium games.
The PS Plus Essential standard is sometimes oversimplified by revealing the new list on the last Wednesday of a month, which would leave some suspecting 24 April as the reveal date. However, it’s a little more complicated than that.
Where are the free PS Plus games for May 2024?
24 May is the last Wednesday of the month, but the subsequent Tuesday is in fact the last day of the month, 31 May. If Sony announced the new PS Plus games on 24 May, it would take approximately two weeks for the games to be available, which would be 7 June.
To some, it may seem that the announcement is coming “late”, but leaving aside days and semantics, it follows the established pattern. It’s not just the last Wednesday of the month, but the last Wednesday before the first Tuesday of the following month. This means that the free PS Plus games for May 2024 will be announced on 1 May and made available on 7 May.
This means that, until that date, fans can still claim the free PS Plus games for April 2024: Immortals of Aveum, Minecraft Legends and Skul: The Hero Slayer. The former is a first-person shooter with elements of magic, Minecraft Legends brings an engaging narrative with an innovative PvP/PvE dynamic to the series, and Skul: The Hero Slayer is a roguelike action-platformer where the player takes on the role of the antagonist.
For those who want to delve into these games, be sure to claim them before the clock strikes midnight on 6 April. What will replace them on PS Plus is anyone’s guess, but PS Plus Essential, Extra and Premium will continue to be a strong month for Sony’s premiere subscription service.
